OUR STORY

About Us

On a quiet Saturday morning on September 26th, 1992 the lives of about one hundred military families changed forever. Shortly after takeoff the C-130 military aircraft carrying about 100 senior military officers on an excursion from Lagos to Kaduna, went down in a muddy swamp in Ejigbo-Lagos state.  Everyone onboard perished.

Like most of the military wives affected, the life my family and I knew was suddenly changed in its prime. The journey to fatherlessness and widowhood for my four children ages, eleven, nine, six and three and I was unexpectedly thrust upon us.  Little did we know that this was going to be a telling and trying journey.  Needless to say that this dark road was indeed infested with every type of imaginable surprise any human being could ever encounter.  It was an encounter with the proverbial “the good, the bad and the ugly.”  Above all, however, by the special grace of our Almighty God, it continues to be a learning process that keeps bringing out the best in us in spite of our limitations and weaknesses.

It is this all sustaining grace that kindled this fire that continues to burn in our hearts for the helpless ones among us —the Widows, Orphans, and Fatherless.  Giving voice to the voiceless and a helping hand to the needy is therefore the mission and vision of The Calidan Missions.

“Religion that God Our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:  to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world”.  James 1:27

OUR MISSION

The Mission of The Calidan Missions is to support, protect and provide for widows, orphans and the fatherless in their distress.

Changing Undesirable Traditions: Traditionally, in the developing world, the widow, fatherless, and orphan are frequently left unprotected, unsupported and un-provided for by the very ones who should be caring for them. The young widow is mostly and often hopelessly trapped in the injustice of being stripped of whatever, if any, belongings or money left behind by the deceased spouse. The perpetrators are generally immediate family members; meanwhile the rest of the community looks the other way. She is often abandoned or let go if she has no male children. Consequently, thousands are forced into abusive and un-productive re-marriages.

The Calidan Missions, in partnership with Christian leaders, seeks to restore the hopes and aspirations of thousands of individual victims by providing basic support and protection from such injustice, thus restoring hope, freedom and self-dignity.  In ways such as finding homes and host families, providing food and clothing and making resources available for development and the promotion of overall well-being. The results of lives transformed will be an indication that the age of long, undesirable traditions can indeed be changed.
